We Did It!

Thank you to everyone who helped CREATE Arts Center earn a permanent spot on Global Giving's website! We are proud to now be a part of this international fundraising site where we can spread the word about CREATE's mission to bring art to Montgomery County community through our smARTkids Art Program. Through your generous donations and support, we have raised over $4,000!

The smARTkids Art Program brings a high quality after school program to students in need of additional support for their study habits, language acquisition, and social skills. smARTkids is offered at no cost and provides the families much needed after school care and enrichment opportunities for their children. By helping students succeed academically while building positive relationships with their peers, smARTkids helps them become productive community members.

International Night with CREATE

On March 27, 2012 CREATE Arts Center was proud to participate in Eastern Middle School's International Night 2012! As part of their tour around the world theme, we provided the instruction and the materials for a mask making project that showcased 5 different countries.

Selected masks from Mexico, South Africa, Puerto Rico, Italy and Japan were decorated with feathers, sequins, pipe cleaners, markers and raffia! Each child who visited our table learned a brief history of the mask they chose, along with its purpose and cultural significance.

Featured countries and masks:
  • Mexican animal masks & ‘Day of the Dead’ (El Dio de los Muertos) skull masks
  • South African Ndebele Tribe folk art masks
  • Puerto Rican vejigante coconut masks
  • Venetian Carnivale masks from Italy
  • Japanese Noh or Nogaku theatrical masks

Students ages 13-14 can enroll as CITs, or counselors-in-training, who can create all the wonderful projects with their group along with assisting the teachers with daily tasks. Becoming a CIT is a great way to earn community service or SSL hours for school. High school students ages 15-18 may apply as Summer Camp volunteers by clicking here!
